The Dedalus Foundation

The Dedalus Foundation, founded by the artist Robert Motherwell, fosters public understanding of modern art and modernism by facilitating research, education, publications, exhibitions, and museum collections in this field.

The Foundation is the primary steward of Motherwell’s legacy and is committed to broadening understanding of the artist’s work. To realize these objectives, the Foundation has created and supports programs in many different areas, and is an active operating foundation.

As the residual legatee of Robert Motherwell's estate, the Foundation inherited virtually all of the works of art in the artist's possession at the time of his death, as well as the copyrights to all of his works in all mediums. In addition, the Foundation inherited all of Motherwell's professional papers and memorabilia, his notebooks and correspondence, his photographic archive, and his extensive art library. These materials constitute the Archive and Library of the Dedalus Foundation and are housed at the Foundation's offices at 555 West 57th Street in New York City. The archive and library are open to researchers by appointment.

The Foundation is sponsoring a catalogue raisonné of Robert Motherwell’s paintings, collages and works on paper for which we would be grateful for any information regarding Motherwell's works.

The Dedalus Foundation has an active grants program, through which it supports educational programs, exhibitions, and publications by museums, universities, and art schools. In addition, the Foundation awards three kinds of individual annual fellowships: doctoral dissertation fellowships in art history; senior fellowships in art history and criticism; and master of fine arts fellowships in painting and sculpture. For further information about the Fellowship programs, please contact by mail the Grants Officer at the Dedalus Foundation, 555 West 57th Street, New York, N.Y. 10019.
